Statement of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand Calling for De-escalation and Strict Adherence to Human Rights Principles Amid Escalating Military Hostilities in the Middle East

04/03/2569 71

The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) expresses its profound concern over the escalating hostilities in the Middle East arising from the military operations by the United States of America and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran. The operations have resulted in the deaths of the Supreme Leader, family members, and several high-ranking government officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as a large number of girls at a primary school in Tehran.  The retaliatory actions by both sides, as well as protests in some countries, have caused widespread loss of life and property among civilians.

The NHRCT expresses its heartfelt condolences for the losses suffered by all parties and condemns the brazen, brutal, and indiscriminate military operations, which constitute an abuse of power without regard for humanitarian principles and constitute clear violations of universal human rights law and international law.

The escalating conflict not only affects the parties directly involved, but also has broader ramifications for regional stability and international peace and security. It impacts the human rights of people in many countries with countless innocent civilians unable to access the most fundamental right to live in security and safety.

The NHRCT calls on all parties to immediately cease all forms of military actions, protect civilians and medical facilities, and ensure unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance to those affected, in accordance with international law. These measures are indispensable to prevent further escalation and to avert catastrophic global loss as history has reportedly demonstrated. The NHRCT further strongly urges all parties to return to diplomatic engagement and pursue the peaceful settlement of disputes, with human rights principles and the well-being of the global community as the paramount consideration.

The NHRCT also expresses its deep concern for the safety and well-being of Thai nationals residing and working in the Middle East and urges the Royal Thai Government to provide full assistance for Thai citizens in the region to the best of its ability.
