Press Statement by the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand
Reaffirming human rights principle of no forced return to danger
.
On 2 February 2025, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Thailand posted on its official Facebook page the response of the Embassy’s spokesperson to a reporter regarding news on the repatriation of Uyghur individuals to China.
.
The National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) noted with unease the posted statement given the long-standing and cordial relations between Thailand and China. However, the NHRCT reaffirms its commitment to uphold human rights principles in the performance of its duties, particularly the non-refoulement principle of not returning a person to danger.
.
This principle is a binding obligation of Thailand as a State Party to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT), and in compliance with the provisions of the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act B.E. 2565 (2022).
