On 18 February 2021, Mrs. Prakairatana Thontiravong, Acting Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT), revealed the NHRCT decision on the alleged case of human rights violation during the protest of “Khana Ratsadon” on 13 February 2021. As the demonstration "Counting One to Million to Restore Power to the People" taking place around the Democracy Monument and in front of the Supreme Court, it was widely reported in social media that a medical volunteer was assaulted by police officers. In the operation to disperse protesters, the medical volunteer claimed that he was surrounded by police officers for the arrest by pressing him to the ground resulting in several injuries. Later, he was taken to the Border Patrol Police Division 1.
Consequently, at the meeting No. 6/2564 on 17 February 2021 considering cases of human rights violations, the NHRCT considered the incident and decided to bring up the case for investigation of human rights violation. The decision is in accordance with the duties and powers of the NHRCT stipulated in Section 34 of the Organic Act on the National Human Rights Commission B.E. 2560 (2017). The Section stipulates that when appearing to the Commission in any way, whether there is a person who informs or complains of human rights violations, the Commission shall investigate the correct facts and seek the truth without delay and study and analyze the causes of human rights violations by focusing on solving problems and preventing further human rights violations in the same matter.
