Ms. Tuenjai Deetes appreciated relevant agencies in solving the case of Ms. Namphung Panya who successfully traveled to the United States for the science project competition

On 14 May 2019, Ms. Tuenjai Deetes, National Human Rights Commissioner, Chairperson of the Working Group in charge of stateless persons and ethnic minorities congratulated Ms. Namphung Panya, a student of Damrongratsongkroh School in Chiang Rai Province, for her acquisition of Thai nationality together with a Thai passport and then a US visa enabling her to participate in the science project competition Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in the United States in time.
Ms. Deetes said that she appreciated several agencies lending great supports in Ms. Panya’s case, namely the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, state agencies in Chiang Rai Province, academics in universities, civil society organizations and the media. Ms. Deetes also thanked the US Embassy in Bangkok for approving a US visa to Ms. Panya.
Ms. Deetes further said it was a great beginning that all parties recognized the importance of legal status for stateless children and their right to fully develop their potentials. The case also raised awareness of society to the issue of statelessness, particularly of children and youth. She hoped that Ms. Panya’s case would exemplify how to guarantee basic rights of a stateless person among agencies efficiently and effectively.
“I also admire Ms. Panya's mother and brother who have cultivated Ms. Panya to become a person of value in society. It is an example of a quality family with a warm love despite their statelessness” said Ms. Deetes.
